Ting Zhu, Woodruff Professor in the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering, has been selected to receive the 2023 ASME Materials Division Centennial Mid-Career Award. Zhu is being honored for his “seminal contributions to computational nanomechanics, multiscale modeling and mechanistic understanding of the mechanical behavior of advanced materials.

The ASME Materials Division Centennial Mid-Career was established in 2020 as a Materials Division award to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Division. The award recognizes impactful contributions of midcareer researchers in technical areas at the interface of materials and mechanics.

Zhu's research focuses on the mechanical behavior of advanced engineering materials at the nano to macro-scale. He conducts modeling and simulations using the atomistic, continuum and multiscale methods.

“I am honored to be selected for this mid-career award,” Zhu said. “I am very grateful to the great support by my group members, colleagues in the Woodruff School, and collaborators within and outside Georgia Tech.”

As the director of the Zhu Research Group at Georgia Tech, Zhu’s goal is to understand and design materials with superior mechanical performance. The group’s recent research projects include the mechanics of ultra-strength materials; 3D-printed metal alloys; electrode degradation in lithium-ion batteries; strengthening mechanisms in high-entropy alloys; fracture in 2D materials; irradiation damage of nuclear materials; hydrogen embrittlement of alloys; and development of multiscale modeling methods.

Zhu joined Georgia Tech in 2005 as an assistant professor. He is an ASME Fellow and has received numerous awards including the Society of Engineering Science Young Investigator Medal and the ASME Sia Nemat-Nasser Early Career Award.

Zhu will be formally recognized at the 2023 ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress & Exposition (IMECE), taking place later this year in New Orleans, Louisiana. As the Centennial Mid-Career Awardee, he will deliver a technical presentation at the award event.
