Having just completed the 2011-12 academic year, it's a worthy time to place special focus on recent faculty accomplishments. Once again we graduated over 400 bachelor’s degrees (416 to be exact), 251 MS degrees, and 34 doctoral degrees.  Our 88 faculty members are among the most outstanding women and men who are dedicated to both education and research. Our faculty is one of the main reasons that our programs are so highly ranked and, thus, it is critical that we focus not only on recruiting the best of the best, but also on professional development and retention of our current faculty members.

This past year three of our junior faculty members received promotion to associate professor with tenure: Nico DeClercq, Michael Leamy, and Karim Sabra.  Professor Bara Cola just recieved the prestigious PECASE Award while Professor Caroline Genzale was recipient of the SAE John Johnson Award for Outstanding Research in Diesel Engines. In the past six months Professors Tom Kurfess, Asegun Henry and Peter Loutzenhiser have joined the faculty.  Professor Kurfess is currently an ASME Swanson Fellow serving at OSTP and is playing a significant role in the implementation of the AMP manufacturing initiative.  Asegun Henry was an ARPA-E Fellow at DoE before his arrival in the Woodruff School.

We are fortunate to have some endowment funds for the support of mid-career faculty. This past year Professors Ting Zhu and Chris Paredis were named Woodruff Faculty Fellows and receive discretionary funds to assist in the development of their research programs.  We also initiated two new Woodruff Professorships to support outstanding senior faculty members. The first two recipients are Andres Garcia and Andrei Fedorov.  These endowed awards also play a key role in our ability to retain outstanding faculty members.

As we embark upon the new academic year, we will continue to recruit outstanding new faculty, but with your help and support we will also do everything we can to retain our top faculty members and thereby continue to advance the Woodruff School’s academic programs.
